Paul Haines (1932-2003) was an American poet and filmmaker who, after wide travels, lived much of his later life in Canada. In New York in the 1960s he was involved with avant-garde jazz as a producer; subsequently his poems were set to music by musicians such as Carla Bley, George Cartwright, Amy Denio, and others, most famously in the libretto for Bley's jazz opera Escalator Over the Hill. Until the posthumous selection Secret Carnival Workers was published by Coach House in 2007, this was his only published book of poems.
