Cape Town, South Africa: Erdmann Contemporary, 2012.

First printing. 109 pp., 5.75 x 8.5 inches. Perfect-bound in printed card covers. Second edition. Compiled and written by Heidi Erdmann. As new. Uncommon; WorldCat locates four copies in US institutions. Item #4075

Artist Manfred Zylla was born in Augsburg, Germany, in 1939 and arrived in South Africa in 1970. A prominent and visible critic of apartheid, his work has always dealt directly with events (such as the Soweto uprising in 1976) and social issues, and was repeatedly banned by the government. The present book began as the accompaniment for an exhibition mounted by Heidi Erdmann, and eventually evolved into a first-person narration of Zylla’s life, a retrospection over seven decades. With more than 150 reproductions in color and black-&-white, primarily of the artist’s drawings and prints, but also including photographs and other documents.

Price: $35.00
