Orange Lining is a public art project that spans the 7.3 miles of the new (in 2015) light-rail line running from Portland to Milwaukie, Oregon. Short lines of text were gathered through a public call for submissions; the selected lines were distributed along the rail line in two phases. In the first phase, Art Starts Now, the texts were stenciled onto rolls of orange plastic erosion fencing, which was temporarily installed by construction crews wherever needed; these lines were often visible to travelers in all manner of conveyance, from multiple directions. In the second phase, the lines were stamped into fresh concrete wherever sidewalks were added along the new alignment. Eleven hundred submissions were received; just over a hundred were published in this innovative project that, in the words of the artists, “worked with common construction materials used by the skilled tradespeople responsible for building the light-rail alignment.” The book is a visual catalogue, presenting 175 photographs that document every stage of the project, along with diagrams, a list of all the selected texts and authors, and maps that show their locations.
