Concerning the Spiritual in Art
New York: Wittenborn, Schultz, 1947.
First edition thus. 95 pp., 7.5 x 10 inches. Sewn signatures glued into printed card covers. Photographic frontispiece portrait of the artist in his studio, and illustrations in black-and-white throughout; cover and typography by Paul Rand. A volume in the Documents of Modern Art series edited by Robert Motherwell. Laid into this copy is a press release from the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, regarding the opening of a large Kandinsky retrospective (undated, but 1952). Light soiling to wrappers and a tiny loss to crown of spine, otherwise the book is very good; press release folded for mailing, with a tiny bit of smudging along the lower fold, otherwise very good. Item #4761
A nice copy of the first printing of this text in the DMA series, in a revised English version: "Uber das Geistige in der Kunst (original German edition, 1912) was first published in an English translation by Michael Sadleir, authorized by Kandinsky, under the title The Art of Spiritual Harmony, London and Boston, 1914. The present edition, authorized by Mme Kandinsky, is a version of the Sadleir translation, with considerable re-translation, by Francis Golffing, Michael Harrison and Ferdinand Ostertag."
