The third of the 1990s Black Sparrow collections of Berlin’s stories, and the last book published during the author’s lifetime. Lucia Berlin had a small but devoted contemporary readership composed in large part of poets and readers of poetry, and she was published by a succession of adventurous small literary presses (Zephyrus Image, Poltroon, Tombouctou). Her work gained a wide audience and justified acclaim after the posthumous selection A Manual for Cleaning Women, edited by Stephen Emerson, was published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in 2015.
