Poet Robert Creeley and composer and soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy met on a radio show hosted by Pierre Joris in 1982; their improvisation on the spot led to a long friendship and association. Lacy set twenty of Creeley's poems to music as part of an evening-length show that included dancers and decor by painter Kenneth Noland; the show premiered in 1984, and the songs were recorded in 1985 and released as Futurities. After Lacy died in 2004, Creeley helped to arrange a memorial at the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church in New York, which took place in January of 2005. Creeley himself died two months later.
