Andy Warhol rejects; Jasper Johns accepts

New York: Hawk’s Well Press, 1965
Five numbers in four volumes: 64, 68, (80), 118 pp., small 8vo. Volumes 1–3 sewn in signatures, 4-5 perfect-bound. Covers by Amy Mendelson, Robert Morris, Andy Warhol, and George Maciunas. Numbers 2, 3, and 4-5 are signed by both Antin and Rothenberg. Numbers 1, 2, and 4-5 in very good or better condition, mostly unopened, with some rubbing, creasing, and soiling to covers; number 3 about very good, with minor light stains and abrasions.

A complete run of this legendary downtown New York magazine, which brought together poets and visual artists in powerful ways. This set includes the rare first version of Warhol’s notorious “Bomb Hanoi” cover for no. 3, rejected by the artist. (The issue was reprinted with the cover corrected, and presumably copies of the first version were discarded.)

In addition, laid into issue no. 1, at David Antin’s contribution, is a handwritten note, signed, from Antin to Jasper Johns, c. 60 words, beginning “This is the magazine I told you I was going to put out when we met at Nicco Calas’. It contains the long poem that was inflicted on you (among other things) . . .”

About as interesting a set as you could hope for.
