“The Search for the Big Statement”

New York: Scrap, 1961
5 pp., 4to and folio. Single large sheet, folded for mailing, as originally issued. (Pages 1 and 5, functioning as front and back cover, are quarto size; pages 2-4 are folio.) With two black-and-white reproductions. Newsprint browned with age, as always, with a few faint and unobtrusive spots and a very small tear at the fold, but still in very good condition, and not too fragile or brittle to be handled.

The fifth issue of the legendary downtown artworld newspaper (“New York’s Finest”), which includes Sidney Geist’s “A View of Rothko’s Image” — an addendum of sorts to Geist’s notorious send-up (in issue number 4) of the essay by Peter Selz in the Rothko retrospective catalogue of that year. (Geist’s earlier piece famously resulted in Rothko asking MoMA to withdraw Selz’s essay from future copies of the catalogue.)

Also in this issue: “Brecht Berlin / New York,” Josephine Herbst’s response to a Living Theater production; a set of manifestoes on music and dance by Lucia Dlugoszewski; a poem by Margaret Randall (from her just-published first book); a long review by Louis Finkelstein of a show of drawings by Charles Cajori; letters from Katherine Kuh and David Sylvester; and advertisements for
various exhibitions.
