750.00

Santa Barbara, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1978
Two volumes: 261, 269 pp., 8vo. Quarter-cloth and illustrated paper over boards, in acetate dust-jackets, as issued. Each volume is one of a hundred copies handbound by Earle Gray, with an original page of Reznikoff's corrected manuscript bound in. Faintest of bumps to bottom edges of boards, and light scuffing to acetate jackets, otherwise as new.

Reznikoff’s extraordinary long poem of history, based entirely on the text of law reports, edited and versified; a poignant, eloquent counterpoint to the long poems of his peers, and one in which, with characteristic modesty, Reznikoff lets history speak for itself.

The heavily edited manuscript pages included in these volumes show the poet’s process, as he aligns and hones the diction of the original reports, and breaks the prose into lines.

A handsome, pristine set.
