"The Infinite Raped in Alamogordo"

Brooklyn, NY: Hemispheres Editions, 1946
First printing. 53 pp., 8vo. Decorated cloth. Jacket flaps laid in (with George Barker illustration on back flap); rest of jacket lacking. Cloth sunned at edges, and acidic paper tanned as usual, but a respectable copy with a wonderful association.

Six late, hermetic poems of the atomic age, written in English and published by Goll's own Hemispheres imprint (after his French-American magazine of the same name, devoted to surrealism in exile, which ran for six numbers during the war years), with five alchemical and kabbalistic illustrations (from Basil Valentine, Paracelsus, etc.) and notes to the poems.

This copy inscribed "fervently" to political theorist and fellow emigre in wartime NYC, Hannah Arendt.
