Signal Honour and Grave Responsibility

New York: Random House, 1968
144 pp., 8vo. Quarter-cloth and paper over boards, in printed dust-jacket. A very good copy, despite soiling and spotting to the foredge, and a binder’s flaw at the back (resulting in a slight pulling of the last signature). In an unclipped jacket with slight soiling, darkened spine, and small edge tears.

Four essays, delivered at the University of Kent in Canterbury in 1967 to inaugurate the series of lectures founded in memory of  T. S. Eliot. Eliot’s widow Valerie (who supported the lecture series, as well as a poetry prize at the University of Kent) was almost certainly instrumental in the choice of her close friend Auden for the inaugural series, which he describes in his foreword as a “signal honour and grave responsibility.”

This copy is signed by the author below his crossed-out name on the title page (per his habit), and additionally signed  by Valerie Eliot below her name on the dedication page.

Quite uncommon signed by Auden; very likely unique signed by both.
